The printed headline reads "Statement - Celebrating Five Years of Legal Protections for Gender Identity and Gender Expression." Handwritten in red beneath and after it, someone has added: "and the Regression of Women's Sex-Based Rights," underlined.
A Government of Canada press release dated Ottawa, ON, June 17, 2022 /CNW/, from Women and Gender Equality Canada, with extensive red (and some blue/yellow) handwritten annotations disputing its framing. Printed text, paragraph by paragraph, with the annotations noted inline:
"The Honourable Marci Ien, Minister for Women and Gender Equality and Youth, issued the following statement today:" — "Honourable" is struck through with "Dishonourable" written above it.
"This Sunday, we will celebrate the progress that the Government of Canada has made to protect trans and gender diverse people. On June 19, 2017, the Governor General signed Bill C-16 into law, amending the Canadian Human Rights Act and the Criminal Code. The amendments established the legal authority needed to counter discrimination based on gender identity and gender expression." — "the progress" is annotated with "regression of women's rights and" inserted before it; "has made to protect" has "to protect" struck through with "by virtue signalling about" written above; "discrimination based" is struck through with "dissent by women" written above.
"This anniversary reminds us that for generations, trans and gender-diverse people in Canada have faced discrimination, violence, and harassment. This has prevented many from participating fully in, and contributing equally to, communities across the country. As a result, trans and gender-diverse people are among the most vulnerable groups in our society." — both instances of "trans and gender-diverse people" are struck through and replaced with "women and girls"; "are" has "still" inserted before it. Below this paragraph, in blue: "But we don't care about the 50.36% (women) as much as the 0.33% (LGBTQ+)."
"Since the enactment of Bill C-16, the Canadian Human Rights Act has explicitly prohibited discrimination based on gender identity and gender expression. The Bill also added the phrase 'gender identity or expression' to the sections of the Criminal Code related to hate propaganda and sentencing (sections 318 and 718.2, respectively)." — "prohibited" is struck through with "encouraged" above and "against women" inserted after "discrimination"; "gender identity" (second instance) is annotated "a feeling or identity now!" while "expression" is annotated "biology, reality." Below, in red: "We're coming for the thought criminals!"
"Every person living in Canada deserves to be treated equally and with respect. Bill C-16 affirms that. Diversity is our strength, and ensuring it is preserved and valued is critical to building a more inclusive and equal society for all. On this important anniversary, and in our everyday lives, I encourage everyone to promote diversity, inclusion and equity." — "Every" has "Although every" inserted before; "affirms" is struck through with "destroyed" above; "is" (before "our strength") has "used to be" above; "preserved and valued" is struck through with "redefined to mean 'nonsense'" above; "inclusive and equal" is struck through with "profitable + vulnerable" above; "all" is struck through with "us to exploit" above; and the final line has "by which we mean 'centering men's feelings over women's Charter-given rights.'" added after "equity."
